This is really a ☆☆ book, but I'm giving it one extra ☆ because it's important and noteworthy, being one of two (afaik) trans books for middle grade. It's just not very well written.

What's Left of Me
This reminded me of Northern Lights/The Golden Compass (Bolvangar and the "Intercision") meets Hunger Games (girl against the world, dystopian trilogy). I liked the idea of the story a lot more than I liked the story itself; Eva and Addie didn't grab me, but I will keep reading because I want to know how Eva/Addie and Ryan/Devon work out their relationship(s). The worldbuilding, at least, was really interesting, although a little too District 13 at the end with the "foreigners."
The Desire Map
Meh.I like a good self-help book, but I'm glad I borrowed this one from a friend. What a bore. It was just a mixmash of feel good, wishy-washy New Age appropriative, unexamined class privilege… Yawn.
Elan, Son of Two Peoples
I bought this book with the kindergarten year-long unit on celebrations in mind and it did not disappoint. I'm always happy to find Jewish books about something other than Hanukkah and I think this will introduce my students - many Third Culture and bicultural kids - to cultures new to them and different, but Elan's story will, I hope, resonate with them as he finds a happy place in both worlds.
Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers' Strike of 1909
What an inspiring story! This is another woman hero from American history that, surprise!, was never taught in any history class I took in school, so it's my honor to bring this book to my students. I hope they can identify with Clara's spirit and her strong desire to learn English to better help with organizing - while honoring that she calls for the strike in her mother language.
Mary Walker Wears the Pants: The True Story of the Doctor, Reformer, and Civil War Hero
I had never heard of Mary Edwards Walker, which is why I needed this book for my library. I don't want my students growing up thinking there were only three famous women in history (Princess Diana, Helen Keller, and Betsy Ross). Mary Edwards Walker is a great role model for all students, boys and girls - not to mention, a fashion icon.
Gaijin: American Prisoner of War
I read this book when it came into my library collection with a big order. I think I might bump it up to the secondary library, so I'm glad I gave it a read.
This One Summer
I liked the quiet, meandering story about Windy and Rose at camp. I think this is the perfect graphic novel for people who think sequential art stories have to be about superheroes.
