A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens I listened to Neil Gaiman's performance for the New York Public Library on Christmas this year, and I think it will become a tradition.

George

George - Alex Gino This is really a ☆☆ book, but I'm giving it one extra ☆ because it's important and noteworthy, being one of two (afaik) trans books for middle grade. It's just not very well written.

Princeless: Get Over Yourself

Princeless: Get Over Yourself - Emily Martin (Illustrator), Jeremy Whitley I didn't like this one quite as much as the first. Is it just me, or did the art look off-model?

Not Every Princess

Not Every Princess - Jeffrey Bone This book does what it sets out to do and I like the message, but I felt like there was something missing.

The Book with No Pictures

The Book with No Pictures - B.J. Novak This seems like it could be fun, but I'm saving my real review until I've had a chance to read it to/with my students.

Let's Eat Ramen and Other Doujinshi Short Stories

Let's Eat Ramen and Other Doujinshi Short Stories - Nagumo, Aji-Ichi, Nagumo Full review: https://perfectworry.wordpress.com/2015/04/20/irregular-review-lets-eat-ramen-nagumo-aji-ichi/

Dragon's Danger: Book One of the Blood Bound

Dragon's Danger: Book One of the Blood Bound - Edward Branley I DNF'd this book because it felt unpolished and betrayed a lack of understanding about the middle grade audience.

The Whisper (The Riverman Trilogy)

The Whisper (The Riverman Trilogy) - Aaron Starmer I'm leaving this one unrated because I honestly don't know how I feel about it.

My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories

My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories - Rainbow Rowell, Holly Black, Laini Taylor, Myra McEntire, Kiersten White, Stephanie Perkins, Gayle Forman, Matt de la Pena, Jenny Han, Ally Carter, Kelly Link, David Levithan Click here for full review.

This lost a star because there were exactly zero girl/girl stories. Otherwise, it would have rated a solid ☆☆☆.

What's Left of Me

What's Left of Me - Kat Zhang This reminded me of Northern Lights/The Golden Compass (Bolvangar and the "Intercision") meets Hunger Games (girl against the world, dystopian trilogy). I liked the idea of the story a lot more than I liked the story itself; Eva and Addie didn't grab me, but I will keep reading because I want to know how Eva/Addie and Ryan/Devon work out their relationship(s). The worldbuilding, at least, was really interesting, although a little too District 13 at the end with the "foreigners."

The Desire Map

The Desire Map - Danielle LaPorte Meh.
I like a good self-help book, but I'm glad I borrowed this one from a friend. What a bore. It was just a mixmash of feel good, wishy-washy New Age appropriative, unexamined class privilege… Yawn.

Elan, Son of Two Peoples

Elan, Son of Two Peoples - Heidi Smith Hyde I bought this book with the kindergarten year-long unit on celebrations in mind and it did not disappoint. I'm always happy to find Jewish books about something other than Hanukkah and I think this will introduce my students - many Third Culture and bicultural kids - to cultures new to them and different, but Elan's story will, I hope, resonate with them as he finds a happy place in both worlds.

Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers' Strike of 1909

Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirtwaist Makers' Strike of 1909 - Michelle Markel, Melissa Sweet What an inspiring story! This is another woman hero from American history that, surprise!, was never taught in any history class I took in school, so it's my honor to bring this book to my students. I hope they can identify with Clara's spirit and her strong desire to learn English to better help with organizing - while honoring that she calls for the strike in her mother language.

Mary Walker Wears the Pants: The True Story of the Doctor, Reformer, and Civil War Hero

Mary Walker Wears the Pants: The True Story of the Doctor, Reformer, and Civil War Hero - Cheryl Harness, Carlo Molinari I had never heard of Mary Edwards Walker, which is why I needed this book for my library. I don't want my students growing up thinking there were only three famous women in history (Princess Diana, Helen Keller, and Betsy Ross). Mary Edwards Walker is a great role model for all students, boys and girls - not to mention, a fashion icon.

Gaijin: American Prisoner of War

Gaijin: American Prisoner of War - Matt Faulkner I read this book when it came into my library collection with a big order. I think I might bump it up to the secondary library, so I'm glad I gave it a read.

This One Summer

This One Summer - Mariko Tamaki, Jillian Tamaki I liked the quiet, meandering story about Windy and Rose at camp. I think this is the perfect graphic novel for people who think sequential art stories have to be about superheroes.
